History of the
Delta Fair

The Delta Fair is the second oldest fair in Ontario. The first meeting was held on June 10, 1830 with 39 prominent settlers, farmers and businessmen of Leeds County in attendance. The meeting was held at the home of Joseph Derbyshire in Farmersville (now Athens).

The first president elected was the Hon. Charles Jones, a pioneer Brockville merchant and miller. Jones later became a member of the Upper Canada Legislative Council. He was born in 1781 and died in Brockville in 1840 after serving the Society as President for 10 years. Three Vice-Presidents were elected: George Breakenridge, John Ketchum and Joseph Wiltse. Ben Hamblin was the first Treasurer and J.K. Hartwell of Brockville was the first Secretary. The membership was comprised of farmers from Elizabethtown, Yonge Township, Lansdowne, Leeds Township, Bastard Township, South Crosby Township, Kitley Township and Elmsley Township.

The existing fair grounds were purchased from William George Morris (farmer and merchant) and his wife Eliza Jane Morris (school teacher) in 1911 for the sum of $1600.00. Prior to this date, the grounds were leased from the Morris family.

The society was originally incorporated as the "South Leeds Agricultural Society" and the membership adopted the slogan of this fair being "the people's holiday". The Ontario Department of Agriculture erected a stone monument bearing a plaque which commemorated the first 100 years service of the South Leeds Agriculture to Leeds County, 1830 - 1930. Following the 100th Anniversary celebrations, the membership opted to change the name to the present, Delta Agricultural Society.http://www.athensontario.com/shapeimage_9_link_0
PIE AUCTION

Last year at Delta Fair we did our first ever PIE AUCTION, what a success!

It was so successful we want to do it again, this year we will be asking our victorious last years pie makers to return and perhaps increase their pies worth.

Last year we donated the profit to the Portland Football Club whose girls team is heading to Sweden in a couple of years. We intend to donate to this organization again this year, so please let us know you have a GREAT PIE that we can auction or be present on Sunday July 26th to take home a tasty treat.

Thank you,

Delta Agricultural Society
